<abstract>
Background: Hepatitis B, although a vaccine preventable disease, is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. The prevalence is four folds higher among healthcare workers (HCW). Therefore, the objective of this study was to assess and compare the KAP towards Hepatitis B vaccination among different groups of healthcare workers in a tertiary hospital.
Methods: Cross-sectional survey was conducted with a questionnaire to gather information from different groups of healthcare workers which included doctors, nurses, dentists and lab technicians in a tertiary hospital in Bangalore, Karnataka. The data collected was coded and analyzed using SPSS software version 23. ANOVA was then used for finding the mean difference between the groups.
Results: This cross-sectional study included N = 121 healthcare professionals (doctors n = 31, dental surgeons n = 30, nurses n = 30, lab technicians n = 30). Demographic variables were also stratified by professional groups to minimize confounding. Chi-square test showed no significant difference in gender or age distribution across groups (p > 0.05). Moreover, one-way ANOVA demonstrated statistically significant differences in knowledge, attitude, practice, and total KAP scores across professional groups (p < 0.001). Levene’s test confirmed homogeneity of variances (p > 0.05). In addition, effect size analysis showed moderate-to-large effects, with professional category explaining 16% variance in knowledge, 21% in attitude, 9% in practice, and 24% in total KAP scores.
Conclusion: The study showed KAP gap in HCW’s regarding hepatitis B, and more so in paramedical workers. This gap needs to be filled with the creation of a central database, regular reminders for vaccination, strengthening of the HICC, and waste disposal guidance to HCWs.
</abstract>
